how to use an oxygen concentrator

Dear Patient,

Please carefully follow the instructions below to safely set up and use your oxygen concentrator.

Placement of the Unit

Place the unit at a distance of 0.30 to 0.60 meters from walls and furniture. The unit needs sufficient space to draw in oxygen and discharge exhaust gases. Ensure that the surrounding area remains unobstructed.

The oxygen concentrator also generates heat during operation. Placing it too close to furniture, curtains, or other objects may create a fire hazard.

Connecting the Humidifier Bottle (If Required)

If a humidifier bottle is prescribed:

  • Insert the screw cap of the humidifier bottle into the outlet of the oxygen concentrator.
  • Turn the bottle slowly until it is securely attached.
  • The outlet location may vary by model. Please consult your machine’s manual. It is often located on the side of the unit near the control dials.
  • Use only distilled or filtered water.
  • Unscrew the cap, fill the bottle with water, and securely fasten the cap before attaching it to the concentrator.
  • Replace the water each time you use the unit.
  • A humidifier bottle is typically prescribed if your oxygen flow rate exceeds 2–3 litres per minute (LPM).

Attaching the Oxygen Tubing

  • If using a humidifier bottle, connect your oxygen tubing to the port on the bottle.
  • If not using a humidifier bottle, attach an oxygen adapter (also called a Christmas tree adapter) to the outlet.
  • Insert the larger end of the adapter into the machine’s outlet. It usually fits by pushing it firmly into place.
  • Consult your manual if you experience any difficulty.

Checking the Air Filter

Your concentrator includes an air intake filter that removes particles and allergens.

  • Ensure the filter is properly installed before turning on the machine.
  • Remove and clean the filter once a week.
  • Wash it in warm water, squeeze out excess water, and pat dry with a clean towel before reinserting.

Starting the Machine

  • Plug the unit into a grounded outlet that is not shared with other devices.
  • Do not use an extension cord.
  • Ensure the unit is switched off before plugging it in.
  • Turn the on/off switch to the “on” position (may also be labeled “start”).
  • The machine will sound an alarm briefly when powered on. This is normal.
  • Wait 15–20 minutes before use to allow the oxygen concentration to stabilize. Follow your manual or doctor’s instructions for your specific model.

Setting the Oxygen Flow Rate

  • Locate the litre control knob or switch (marked LPM or with numbers such as 1, 2, 3, etc.).
  • Adjust the setting to the level prescribed by your doctor.
  • Do not increase or decrease the flow rate without medical advice.
  • If you are unsure of your prescribed setting, contact your physician.

Checking Tubing

  • Inspect your tubing for kinks or bends.
  • Smooth out any obstructions to ensure proper airflow.
  • Replace tubing if it remains kinked.

Using the Mask or Nasal Cannula

For a mask:

  • Place the mask securely over your face.
  • Ensure there are no gaps.
  • Adjust straps for a comfortable fit.

For a nasal cannula:

  • Insert the curved ends into your nostrils.
  • Loop the tubing over your ears.
  • Adjust under your chin for comfort.
  • To check airflow, place the cannula in water and look for bubbles.

Breathe normally and use the device for the duration prescribed by your doctor.

Turning Off the Machine

When not in use, switch the machine to “off.”

Do not leave the unit running unattended, as it may overheat and pose a fire risk.
